Sunday Grass Seed

Grass is a crop and better crops come from high quality seed. Like all farmers, we believe in starting with good seed. That’s why we provide a variety of high quality seeds with improved attributes like disease and drought resistance and even early greening. Seeding is one of the best ways to replenish and grow a stronger crop of grass,  which means a stronger, more resilient lawn that will require less upkeep.

Dense lawns crowd out weeds and prevent lawn disease. Sunday grass seeds contain no fillers. That means that in every Sunday seed pouch, you’ll get only high quality cultivars, so that you can grow more of exactly what you want, without anything that you don’t.

Cultivar: cul·ti·var /ˈkəltəˌvär/ a plant variety that has been produced in cultivation by selective breeding.

How to Choose Grass Seed

It is important to choose the right seed for your lawn. When it comes to grass, there are three main questions you have to ask.

What is your growing climate?

The most important part of deciding which type of grass to grow is understanding your climate growing season. Warm season grasses typically self-seed and require less additional application. Cool season lawns don’t breed themselves, so you must seed to maintain lawn density. Like many crops, it is actually preferable to have plants not self-seed, this saves more of the nutrients for the plant as less is expended growing seeds.

What condition is your current lawn in?

Evaluating the condition of your current lawn is the only way to know the best approach to improving it. Whether you are starting a lawn from seed, overseeding, or patching bare spots, getting to know your lawn and soil condition is the first step towards growing better.

How much seed do you need?

Seed Application

  1. For a rotary spreader, use lowest spreader setting
  2. Slowly increase flow until optimal seed distribution
  3. Don’t over apply, too much seed can increase problems
  4. Under application will create thin growth

New Lawn Seeding

  1. Rake or till the top 2-3 inches of soil
  2. Apply seed generously
  3. (Optional) Cover the seed with a thin layer of straw, compost, top soil, or mulch to protect seeds, hold in moisture, and increase germination rate

How Often to Water New Grass Seed

  1. Water the day before seeding to make sure the soil is properly hydrated
  2. When overseeding maintain a normal watering schedule
  3. After seeding water carefully to avoid disrupting seed
  4. For a new lawn, Water 1-2x daily until grass is about 2 inches (about 3 weeks)
  5. Avoid water pooling, but keep ground moist
  6. Once grass is established, reduce watering to normal schedule
